Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity operates at its core through Committees. Behind the obvious forefront of building homes, our committees provide the strength and resources to allow us to reach our goals. Though we do not refer to these roles as jobs, individuals looking to give a little more than time on the build site can find a place among one of our committees.
Below you will see the committees that we operate and a brief description of each. If you are interested in serving on any of the committees, please feel free to contact us at either (302) 698-1939 or volunteer@centraldelawarehfh.com. We are dedicated to reaching success with each of the below committees, but only you can make it a reality!
Building
This group oversees the "build". Work is done on homes each Saturday. This committee is also responsible for the coordination of purchasing and delivering of materials needed each Saturday. The Site Supervisor assigns volunteers to a crew that includes skilled personnel so that everyone works on meaningful and rewarding aspects of the construction process.
Church Relations
We seek to strengthen the support of the affiliate's work by gaining volunteers, prayer, and financial resources from all community churches. At least 50% of the churches should become actively involved. We will strive for partnerships and long-lasting bonds.
Fundraising
We engage the community and colaborate with corporations to achieve successful fundraising events throughout the year. We provide logistics for in-kind donations, typically building materials for our home projects. Also, we undertake grant writing as a final form of fundraising.
Family Selection
Selects our "Partner Family". Individuals or couples desiring to be selected must attend three seminars and meet certain criteria before being selected. These seminars are advertised locally. This is the first step in the building process because we build each home to suit the family that is selected. This is also the start of a life long Partnership between Habitat and the Partner Family.
Family Support
Starts the counseling process with the family at the time of selection and a relationship is established for life or until the mortgage is paid in full. There are many aspects to home-ownership that many families are unprepared for. Family Support Committee works with each family from the selection process, to the building process, through closing, and the day to day problems that home-owners face.
Public Relations
Responsible for sharing Habitat's mission with the people living in the geographic area. The goal of the committee is to continually raise and maintain the comuunity's awareness of Habitat's work in ways that properly reflect the mission, beliefs, and image of Habitat for Humanity. This includes educating the public of principles, events, and ways to get involved. Ultimately we will activate more people to help shape and eliminate poverty housing.
ReStore
Chairman: Ceil Jones |
Ensuring the success of the Habitat ReStore by sustaining successful business and marketing practices with continued donor support. The ReStore relies heavily on volunteer support to organize regular deliveries of donations and move heavy furniture.
Site Selection
Committee Members search for donated or low cost building sites. The cost of land is included in the total purchase price of each house. On average, about 20% of the cost of the homes we build is for the building lot. Additionally, we will seek to gain cooperation with local cities.
Volunteer Coordination
Habitat receives countless calls to volunteer from many different parts of our community. Various civic groups, churches, corporations, youth groups, and DAFB are examples of just a few sources that provide us with volunteers. It is the Coordinators job to bring the right combination of volunteers, skilled and unskilled, together each Saturday to efficiently as possible complete the building of each home. To make the work day as efficient as possible, we even have volunteer groups that provide lunch to the volunteers.
