SO YOU’RE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING FOR CENTRAL DELAWARE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY?
The most widely known aspect of Habitat for Humanity is its dedicated volunteers that build our homes one hammer at a time. This is the most common way that individuals provide their time to us. If this is your desire please Fill out our Volunteer Form right away for more information! In the meantime, please read our Construction FAQ's to familiarize yourself with our routine. There are, however, many other opportunities to help us thrive by committing to a more logistical role. Most people know that Habitat for Humanity uses volunteers to help with the actual construction of our Partner Family Homes, but we also use volunteers in every other aspect of our housing ministry. Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity has no paid employees and relies 100% on volunteers. The following is a list of positions that we are looking for volunteers to fill:
Substantially all of our funding comes from our local community. We need volunteers to be on our Fund Raising Committee. We are looking for volunteers who can organize a local fundraising event and follow it through. We also need volunteers who are willing to work on a fundraising even but not necessarily run it. Obviously without fundraising we can not build houses so volunteers on our Fund Raising Committee can take pride in their successes as their role is crucial to the success of our program. Our Fund Raising Committee members report to the Committee Chair. The time commitment for this position is open ended. Fundraising goes on all year long, even when we are not building a home so volunteers have the opportunity of devoting as much or as little time to the position as they can afford. If you want to help make a difference in your community please get in touch with us.
We need volunteer(s) to be a future Construction Site Supervisor. This person should have significant construction knowledge but should also have the patience and teaching skills necessary to allow our unskilled volunteers to make a productive contribution to the build while enjoying the learning experience. There are no pay or benefits to this position unless you take into account the tremendous and rewarding feeling of accomplishment in building a home for a family in need while doing it with a rag tag group of volunteers. While actual construction takes place only on Saturdays, the successful candidate will also need to devote more than a few hours during the week doing things like lining up subs, making sure necessary materials are on hand, planning the workday, coordinating lunches, getting building permits and on and on. It takes us from 4-6 months to complete a build so don’t plan on doing much else with your Saturdays after construction starts. If you are the type of person who is a glutton for punishment, or better yet if you know someone with the above skills who is, please get in touch with us.
We need volunteers to be on our Family Support Committee. Our Family Support Committee members need to be good listeners and relationship builders, they need to be sensitive and experienced with issues that may result from living with a limited income, they need to be skilled in areas such as family budgeting and home ownership responsibilities and they need to be willing to work with our Partner Families. Our Family support representatives act as sponsors, advocates and friends to our Partner Families. At the same time they have the responsibility of insuring that our Partner Families are living up to the commitments they made when they became a Partner Family. When assigned certain families, the position can be a challenging one. But the reward is that you are hands on, helping a family break the cycle of poverty. Our Family Support Committee members report to the Committee Chair. Habitat has extensive materials and guides on how to be a successful Family Support Committee member. Depending on how many Partner Families a committee member is assigned the position can take as little as a couple of hours a month. If you want to help make a difference please get in touch with us. Interested persons should send an email to Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity briefly explaining your interest in joining our organization and any areas you would like to excel. If you know of some else who should be interested please pass the information along to them as well! |
